Join us on March 4th @ 6:30pm (GMT) for a free Zoom session hosted by Whitechapel Gallery led by Ubah Cristina Ali Farah, this writing workshop will invite participants to create a portrait representing a woman who has inspired them, using either images or text. We will use an extract from a text written by Cristina, called Dance of the Oryx, which was produced in response to the idea of creating portraits through text.

Join us on March 5th @ 7pm (GMT) to celebrate the launch of Samatar Elmi’s searingly forthright debut Portrait of Colossus! Elmi’s poetry pamphlet navigates parenting, masculinity, racism and ambiguities of identity. Joined on the night by poets Ubah Cristina Ali Farah and Ahmed Buurmaax, who’ll be blessing us with Italian and Somali translations of Elmi’s work - we are in for a night of wonder! A day-long festival celebrating the life of the iconic Somali Punk pioneer Poly Styrene! In 1976, Marianne Elliot-Said, a young Somali-English woman named herself, ‘Poly Styrene’ and embarking on her musical career posted an advert in the back of NME magazine for band members to join her, later iconic, Punk group, ‘X-Ray Specs’. The title of the advert read: ‘Young Punx That Want to Stick it Together’, a call to those who shared her same spirit of self-creation and tenacity.…
