Join Numbi Arts for a family friendly live streamed feast that celebrates Somali culture with a stellar lineup of our resident artists and special guests of poets, musicians, DJs and visual artists.
We will be celebrating the mother tongue language throughout October as we merge the virtual and physical in true Numbi cafe conversations, tradition, culminating in this live streamed event via the good folks at Popular Union!
Your Mother Tongue is Gold – Afkaaga Hooyo Waa Dahab! Every day this Black History Month 2020 we will be celebrating and showcasing Somali language through poetry, music and food. From the contemporary poet Ahmed Yusuf ‘Buurmaah’ who will be sharing the Somali tradition of poetry with us, special acoustic set with poet, song writer, musician, protege and biographer of Xudaydi AUN. Sultan Ali Shire and musician singer song writer Abdulkarim Raas, who creates a truly organic whole and infectious rhythms, to DJ Hodan Styrene who’ll be crafting a musical feast with a stellar line up of artists in true Numbi tradition.
Expect to be served video tutorials of delicious traditional Somali dishes every Saturday with the help of Hooyo’s Dishes, along with recipes so you can cook along. We would love to see your attempts at making these recipes (don’t forget to tag us in your posts and share your cooking).
We have prepared a live streamed performance with musicians Saleh Hariri, Abdullahi ‘Cujeeri’, Omar Teesiyow and Said Hussain – armed with a repertoire of funky oldies and contemporary compilations of the best Somali Qaraami and Afro-funk.
To kick off the month, poet Elmi Ali will share his poetry to wet you appetite – encompassing all that the month will bring! It will be a filmic, poetic and musical journey through our shared Black History this October.
